Alfred Oaten was born on 29 October 1869 at Hoxton, London.1 He was the son of John Oaten and Mary Ann Luxton.1 Alfred Oaten was baptised at Christ Church on Sunday, 7 September 1873 at Hoxton, London. jointly with his sister Rosina.1

Alfred Oaten married Mary Ann Bird at St. Winifred's on Sunday, 22 April 1906 at Penrhiwceiber, Mountain Ash, Glamorgan.1 Alfred Oaten Alfred Oaten, like his brother Francis Luxton Oaten, worked in the mines and so when the Great War began, he was in a reserved occupation and had no need to go to war. Hiis brother was killed in the mines in August 1914. Alfred's fear of the mines following his brother's death happened to coincide with a war recruitment campaign and he signed up.1

Alfred died on 25 May 1915 at Ypres, France, at age 45. He was killed at Ypres just eight weeks after joining up.1
