James Chappell was born on 8 January 1907.1 He was the son of Arthur Chappell and Elizabeth Florence Clark.1 James Chappell was christened in 1907 at Rumbolds Whyke, Chichester, Sussex.1 He James attended the Blue coats School at Chichester, Sussex, He later joined the British Police Force and retired at the rank of Sergeant. He and Hilda had two daughters and a son. They lived at Worthing, Sussex

A notice from a local newspaper - no date - entitled -'The Sergeant was shopping.'
'While shopping with his wife, Sergt. Chappelle saw Eileen Mary Underwood, 22 married woman, of Teville-road, Worthing, pick up a bottle of shampoo in Woolworths Stores, and walk away without paying for it. He followed her into the street challenged her, and she then said she would pay for the shampoo. She was taken into custody and when her shopping bag was searched, other articles were found. To-day, at Worthing, Underwood was bound over for two years and ordered to pay 30s. costs for stealing the shampoo and other articles and for stealing a dress valued two pounds five shillings and sixpence from Kinch and Lack.
She pleaded guilty and asked for another charge concerning theft of a blouse valued 10s. (ten shillings) from Bentalls to be taken into consideration.' at Chichester, Sussex.1

He married Hilda May Johnson, on Thursday, 8 January 1931.1

James died on 2 April 1978 at age 71.1
