William was born on Friday, 26 March 1813 at Sydney.1,3 He was the son of William Hill and Mary Johnson.2,1 William Smith Hill was baptised at St. Philips on Sunday, 26 December 1813 at Sydney, New South Wales.4 He departed from Gravesend, Kent, on 22 January 1839 on the Anne.5 He arrived in Gravesend, Kent, on 15 May 1839.5
William arrived on the Anne and brought "a superior horse, Jim Crow, and five very superior pure bred Durham bulls. A very superior dray horse died on the passage, estimated to be worth 400 guineas. Jim Crow is open to trot any horse in the world for 100 to 500 guineas."6 The animals he imported were soon sold "William Hill's importation of bulls have come to an excellent market; he has disposed of one to R. Fitzerald, Esq for £500; one to Robert Johnson, Esq. for £S00, and two bull calves to R. Bowman Esq. for £300". He sold the horse Jim Crow for £500 to Charles Smith.7 He departed from Sydney on 20 March 1840 "We have been informed that he is already commissioned with the following orders to execute at home, and bring under his charge
to the colony : — 30 Rams which are to be selected from Lord Western s flocks, 3 first rate Blood Horses ,4 Durham Bulls, a Steam
Flour Mill, and a four-horse Stage Coach."8 He departed from Weymouth, Dorset, on 6 April 1841 on the Hero.9 He arrived in Weymouth, Dorset, on 6 August 1841.9
William Smith Hill returned to Sydney "with a stud of very superior horses; this is the fourth trip this gentleman has made to England for the purpose of importing 'horses and cattle." It was reported that 5 horses were in excellent condition, and the newspaper listed the pedigree of four of them.10,11
A William Smith Hill sold two carriage-horses called 'Lunger(?)' and 'Phoenix' to a Mr. R. Rouse for £1800.12
William likely died on 30 January 1844 at age 30 at sea.13 His body was likely interred at South Head Cemetery at Vaucluse, New South Wales. Section:H Row:3.13
William may have died in May 1873 at age 60.14,15
