Frederick Manthorpe was born circa 1857 at Somerleyton, Suffolk.1 He was the son of George Marston Manthorpe and Caroline Oldman.1

He was recorded as living with his parents, his older brother, a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law Leornel in the 1861 census at 3 Old Hall, Herringfleet, Suffolk. Also living in the house were his son-in-law, his daughter-in-law and his two sons.1

He was recorded as living with his parents, Emanuel Olman (who may have been his stepbrother), two younger siblings and twin boys of Emanuel Oldman in the 1871 census at Manthorpe's Lake, Herringfleet, Suffolk.2 His occupation was recorded as being a farm labourer in the census.2
