Francis Hawthorn was born circa 1853 at Glasgow.1 He was the son of William Hawthorn and Margaret McLachlan.1 His occupation was recorded as being a scholar in the census.1

He was recorded as living with his parents, 3 boarders and his older brother in the 1861 census at 61 New Wynd, St. Mary, Glasgow. He was recorded as being 8 years old.1 His occupation was recorded as being a confectioner in the census.2

He was recorded as living with his mother, uncle, two boarders and brother William in the 1871 census at 60 Back Wynd, St. Mary, Glasgow. He was recorded as being 18 years old.2

Francis Hawthorn married Marion McBryde on Wednesday, 31 December 1873 at Glasgow.3
