James McCheyne Malcolm was born on 26 August 1869 at 24 Scotland Street, in Glasgow.3,2 He was the son of George Malcolm and Sarah McCheyne.2
His father died 21 January 1871 at the approximate age of 32. James was aged 1 when this happened.
He was recorded as living with his grandmother, his uncle and his aunt in the 1871 census at 23 Oswald Street (now Heron Street), Calton, Bridgeton, Lanarkshire. He was recorded as being 1 year old. His mother was working as a nurse, most likely at the Royal Infirmary.4
