Charles Edward Manthorpe was born on 12 November 1860 at Happy Valley, South Australia.3,2 He was the son of Reverend Charles Manthorpe and Harriet Whitridge Baker.2 He presumably lived with his parents at Franklin Street, in Adelaide, South Australia, in May 1862.4

Charles Edward Manthorpe married Edith Margaret Preston at Glenelg Congregational Church on Tuesday, 20 April 1886 at the Adelaide suburb of Glenelg. They were 25 and 24 respectively.5

Charles died circa 1922.2
