Samuel was born circa 1869 at Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire.3 He was the son of Thomas Jones and Effie Nicholson.1
He was recorded as living with his parents (although his father was out fishing) and sister Amy in the 1871 census at Grove Road, Hoylake, Cheshire. He was recorded as being just 2 years old.4
He was recorded as living with his mother, his mother's mother and siblings Amy, Thomas, Eva, Martha and Ezra in the 1881 census. He was recorded as being 12 years old.3 His occupation was recorded as being a scholar in the census.3
