Martha Davies was born on 6 November 1809 at West Kirby, Cheshire.4,5,6 She was the daughter of Thomas Davies and Martha (?)2,3 Martha Davies was probably baptised on Sunday, 31 December 1809 at West Kirby, Cheshire.3
Martha Davies married Alexander Nicholson, son of Donald Nicholson and Ann Metcalf, at St. Nicholas' on Saturday, 22 May 1830 at Liverpool. They were 20 and 22 respectively.7,1
Martha Davies was recorded as living with Alexander Nicholson in the 1841 census at Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire, and other records indicate this was her spouse. Also living in the house were |Also living in the house were four of their children. Alexander wasn't home on census night..8 Her occupation was recorded as being a mariner's wife in the census.8
She was recorded as head of household in the 1851 census at Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire. She was 41 years old. Also living in the household were her six children, but not her husband (who was probably out fishing on census night.)4 Her occupation was recorded as being a fisherman's wife in the census.4
Martha Davies was recorded as the spouse of Alexander Nicholson in the 1861 census at 22 Village Road, Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire. Also living in the house were two of her two youngest children. Her eight year old daughter Amy was visiting with her son Thomas' wife, and her husband was away from the house, probably working.9,10
Her husband Alexander died 25 January 1871 at the age of 62, leaving her a widow at age 61.
She was recorded as head of household in the 1871 census at Bird's Yard, Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire. She was 61 years old. This was likely the same place as they were in the previous census ten years ago as all their neighbours were the same. Her youngest daughter and two of her grand-children.11 Her occupation was recorded as being a midwife in the census.11
She was recorded as living with her daughter Effie, her husband, and six of her grandchildren aged 12 to one year old in the 1881 census. Her age was recorded as being 71 years old.12 Her occupation was recorded as being a nurse in the census.12
She was recorded as living with her daughter, her daughter's husband and five grandchildren in the 1891 census at Marmion Road, Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire. She was recorded as being 81 years old. The Jones household was next door to Effie's brother Thomas' house.13 Her occupation was recorded as being a midwife in the census.13
Martha died on 4 April 1904 at Hoylake, Cheshire, at age 94.14,1
