John Chalmers was born circa 1819 at Renfrewshire, Scotland.1 He was a mason in June 1838.1

John emigrated from Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, Scotland, in 1838 on the 'Duncan.1' John arrived at Sydney on 30 June 1838.1


He married Jessie Brown, daughter of John Brown and Margaret Miller, at St. Andrew's Scots Presbyterian Church on Monday, 7 June 1841 at Sydney. Jessie was the daughter of a sawyer. The wedding certificate was also signed by Donald Nicholson. Others who may have attended the wedding include Margaret Miller as mother of the bride and John Brown as father of the bride. Brothers and sisters who may have attended include Margaret Brown, John Brown, Alexander Brown, Agnes Brown, Donald Brown and Frances Cameron Ross Brown. John and Jessie went on to have four known children together.2 John Chalmers was a stonemason in October 1847.3 John and Jessie lived in October 1847 at Kent Street, in Sydney.3 John and Jessie lived in October 1859 at 35 Prince Street, in Sydney.4

John died in 1890 at Sydney.5
