James was born on Monday, 11 June 1770 at Craighouse, Resolis, Ross-shire, Scotland.2 He was baptised on Monday, 29 October 1770 at Resolis, Ross-shire, Scotland.2 James was serving with the 42nd Foot Soldiers, 1st Battalion at for at least 12 years from 1 March 1794. He served for part of this time in Canada.2 He was a carpenter in 1795 at Loggie, Ross-shire, Scotland.2 He was described as 5 foot 4 1/2 inches tall with a fair complexion and black eyes in 1795.2

James MacKenzie married Margaret Aird in 1796.2

James MacKenzie married Grace Innes on Tuesday, 6 October 1812 at Tain, Ross-shire, Scotland.2 James MacKenzie was also known as Captain James MacKenzie.3 He was Captain and adjutant of the Easter Regiment Ross local militia.3

James died circa 1844.3 His body was interred at Kincardine Churchyard at Ardgay, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland.3 He was a tenant farmer at Ardchronie, the Parish of Edderton, Ross-shire, Scotland.3
