Martha Ann Leonard was born circa 1825 at Rugeley, Staffordshire.3,2 She was the daughter of James Leonard and Mary Wayte.2 She presumably lived with her parents at Rugeley, Staffordshire, in March 1827. The house, which the Leonard's needed to vacate, was described as a "commodious dwelling-house, situated near the Market PLace, with a good shop to the front" and came with a good pew in the church.4 She presumably lived with her parents at Rugeley, Staffordshire, in October 1827.5

She was recorded as living with her parents, 3 young children, and her siblings Mary, Emma and Ruth in the 1841 census at 1 Boundary Street, Hulme, Manchester. She was recorded as being approximately 15 years old (rounded down to the nearest 5 years).6 She presumably lived with her parents at Burlington Street, Greenheys, Manchester, in July 1848.7

Martha Ann Leonard married William Poppelwell Ellison at Rusholme Road Chapel on Thursday, 13 July 1848 at Rusholme, Manchester.7,8

No records have been found for this person for a twenty year period from 1841 to 1861. There is some speculation that the family may have emmigrated to the colony of South Australia, but returned. Certainly Mary Leonard went to South Australia (probably in 1845), married and had two children but returned in 1857 with them on the death of her husband.

Martha Ann Leonard was recorded as the spouse of William Poppelwell Ellison in the 1851 census at Church Terrace, Tranmere, Cheshire. She was recorded as being 26 years old. Also living in the house was their young son and a servant.9

Martha was recorded as the wife of William Ellison in the 1861 census at Upper Seymour Street, Tranmere, Cheshire; she was recorded as being 36 years old. Also living in the house were their four children and two servants.10

Martha may have died circa June 1869 at Birkenhead Registration District, Cheshire.11
