Short Biography

Mary was born circa 1794 in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire and baptised on Sunday 26 January 1794 in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire.[5]

Mary married James Leonard, son of Thomas Leonard and Elizabeth Baxter, in St. Modwen's in 1815 in Burton upon Trent

Mary and James Leonard became the parents of Mary, probably their first child circa 1816 in Rugeley, Staffordshire. Rugeley in the early 1800's was a small market town in the Hundred of Cuttlestone East. The town "has a remarkably neat, cleanly apperance; the houses are well built". The main item manufactured here were hats and sheet iron. The population was 2,677 in 1821.

Their house was described as a "commodious dwelling-house, situated near the Market PLace, with a good shop to the front" and came with a good pew in the church.

They moved to Hulme, Manchester by 1841. Also living with them were five of their children and three other young children. Their 15 year old son lived three doors down at number 7 with another 15 year old boy.

Twenty years later her husband had died she had moved to Hatherlow, Cheshire. Ten years further on she was with a daughter and her husband, her three grand-daughters, a governess and 2 servants

Mary died on 5 October 1885 in Romiley, Cheshire of 'senectus' or old-age.

Mary Wayte was recorded as living with James Leonard in the 1841 census at 1 Boundary Street, Hulme, Manchester, and other records indicate this was her spouse. The 1841 census only recorded adult ages rounded down to the nearest 5 years; her approximate age was recorded as 45 years old. No records have been found for this person for a twenty year period from 1841 to 1861. There is some speculation that the family may have emmigrated to the colony of South Australia, but returned. Certainly Mary Leonard went to South Australia (probably in 1845), married and had two children but returned in 1857 with them on the death of her husband. She presumably lived with her spouse James at Greenheys, Manchester, in November 1857.17

The rooms are large and the ceilings are high; it is evidently an imposing place.
