James William Smith was born circa 1839 at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.2 He was the son of James George Smith and Lydia Manthorpe.2 James William Smith was baptised on Monday, 29 April 1839 at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.4

He was recorded as living with her parents and older sister Maria in the 1841 census at Market Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. He was recorded as being 2 years old.5

He was recorded as living with his parents and siblings Maria, George, Frederick, Marston and Arthur in the 1851 census at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. He was recorded as being 12 years old.6

He was recorded as living with his parents and his brothers George, Marston, Arthur, Walter, Horatio, Edward and Alfred in the 1861 census at 33 Market Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. He was recorded as being 22 years of age.2 James lived in November 1862 at 36 Market Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.1 He was a painter in November 1862.1

He married Maria Cutting Boyce, at St. Nicholas on Monday, 17 November 1862 at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk..1,7

He was recorded as head of household in the 1871 census with Maria Cutting Boyce as his spouse at 13 Slinkford's Buildings, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Also in the house were his two young children.8 James William Smith was a spindlemaker in a silk factory.8

He was recorded as head of household in the 1881 census with Maria Cutting Boyce as his spouse at 20 Tottenham Street, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Also in the house were four of their children.9 James William Smith was a mill spindle turner at a silk factory on 3 April 1881.9

He was recorded as head of household in the 1891 census with Maria Cutting Boyce as his spouse at 1 Factory Square. Also living in the house were their three youngest children.10 James William Smith was a millwright and labourer on 5 April 1891.10
