Emily Mary Darby was born on 24 November 1863 at Morphett Vale, South Australia.1,2 She was the daughter of Thomas Darby and Jessie Nicholson.1 Emily Mary Darby won fourth prize in the Third Class of the annual school examination on 16 December 1869 at Misses Daniel's school, in Morphett Vale, South Australia.3

When the Darby family moved to Minlacowie, South Australia, by travelled by bullock dray and on arrival cultivated the land, which was scrub, with a single furrow plow and one horse.4

She may have attended the wedding of her sister in the marriage of John Nancarrow and Alice Darby at her parent's house on Thursday, 3 October 1878 at Minlacowie. John and Alice went on to have some 10 children together.5

She may have attended the wedding of her brother in the marriage of John Darby and Edith Watson at the residence of George Wright on Saturday, 12 October 1878 at the Adelaide suburb of Woodville. Edith and John went on to have nine known children together.6 Emily Mary Darby won a small cash prize for a collection of cut flowers at The Minalton Show on 19 October 1880 at Minlaton, South Australia.7 She won two prizes for collections of cut flowers at The Minalton Show in October 1885 at Minlaton, South Australia.8

She may have attended the wedding of her sister in the marriage of William James Long and Jessie Darby in a baptist ceremony conducted by John Nancarrow at the Baptist Church on Wednesday, 24 September 1890 at Minlacowie, South Australia. William and Jessie went on to have two known children together.9,10

She may have attended the wedding of her sister in the marriage of George James Denness and Louisa Margaret Darby at her parent's house on Thursday, 16 April 1891 at Minlacowie. George and Louisa went on to have three children together.11

She married Robert Bain Carmichael, a widowed farmer, son of Andrew Carmichael, at her parent's house in a Baptist cermony conducted by Emily's brother-in-law John Nancarrow on Thursday, 14 September 1893 at Minlacowie. She was 29 and her husband Robert was 31..12,13 Emily and Robert lived circa 1914. Emily's mother elderly mother also shared the house.14 Emily and Robert lived in November 1917 at at 48 Mary Street in the Adelaide suburb of Unley.15

Emily died in 1948.1
