Mary was born in 1765.1 She was the daughter of John Oaten and Mary Ruckley. Mary Oaten was baptised at St. Andrew and St. Mary on Sunday, 14 July 1765 at Pitminster, Somerset.2
She may have married James Harwood, on Monday, 13 June 1796 at Taunton, Somerset..1,2
In John Oaten's will on 21 March 1837 Hannah Tamsey, Mary Oaten, Anne Oaten, Harriet Oaten and Hannah Oaten, Elizabeth Oaten and Amelia Oaten, Harriet Finney, William Finney, Mary Barker, Harriet Oaten and Joseph Oaten were named as heirs. As John's sister, she was to receive 4 shillings per week from the estate..1
