Amelia was born on Thursday, 28 January 1836 at St. Georges, London.1,2,3,4 She was the daughter of John Oaten and Charlotte Amelia Pellett. Amelia Oaten lived with John Oaten in 1837 at Curzon Street, St. George Hanover Square, London.5

In John Oaten's will on 21 March 1837 Hannah Tamsey, Mary Oaten, Anne Oaten, Harriet Oaten and Hannah Oaten, Amelia Oaten, Harriet Finney, William Finney, Mary Barker, Harriet Oaten and Joseph Oaten were named as heirs.6 She presumably lived with her parents at Newland Street, in Belgrave, London, circa 1842.3 She presumably lived with her parents at 10 Caroline Street, Eaton Square, London, circa 1846.7,3

By the terms of her grandfather's will, she should have received £100 on 28 January 1847, her 21st birthday.6 She presumably lived with her parents at Petersham, Surrey, circa 1848.3

She was recorded as living with her parents and her five younger brothers John, Henry, Charles, Albert and Frederick in the 1851 census at 13 Jubilee Place, Chelsea, London. She was recorded as being 15 years old.1,8 She presumably lived with her parents at Kings Parade, in Chelsea, London, in September 1853.9 Amelia Oaten was an assistant steward in December 1853.10

At the age of 17 Amelia emigrated from London on 30 December 1853 on the the barque 'Luconia' with her parents and five younger brothers.10,11 Amelia arrived at Melbourne on 12 June 1854 with her parents and five younger brothers.12,11
She lived with her parents at the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood in June 1855.2

She married Peter Godwin Leith, a clerk, son of Samuel Leith and Agnes Matthews, in a Church of England ceremony at St. Peter's on Saturday, 30 June 1855 at Melbourne. She was 19 and her husband Peter was 28.. John Oaten attended as father of the bride; others who may have attended the wedding include Charlotte Amelia Pellett as mother of the bride. Peter and Amelia went on to have nine children together.13,2,14

Her mother died 12 July 1862 at the approximate age of 58. Amelia was aged 26 when this happened.

She may have attended the wedding of her brother in the marriage of Charles Oaten and Harriet Louisa Roberts a civil service at the Registry Office on Saturday, 25 February 1865 at the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy. Harriet had to get prior permission from a JP due to her age. It's not clear why they chose a civil service over a religious one. Harriet and Charles went on to have six children together, three of whom lived into their adulthood.15

Her father died 11 April 1866 at the approximate age of 64. Amelia was aged 30 when this happened.

Amelia died on 23 June 1907 at Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand, at age 71.4,14 Her body was interred at Northern Cemetery on 25 June 1907 at Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.16
