Dr. James Henry Westbrook may have been born on 19 April 1790 at Rotherhithe, London.1 He may have been born on 10 May 1790 at Rotherhithe, London.2 He was the son of Henry Westbrook and Sarah Taylor. Dr. James Henry Westbrook was baptised at St. Mary the Virgin on Sunday, 16 May 1790 at Rotherhithe, London.2,3 He was ill with asthma, which prompted his move to the colonies seeking a better climate.1

He married Elizabeth Chapel, in a Church of England ceremony at St. George in the East on Thursday, 2 May 1816 at London.. They went on to have 11 children over 19 years.4

At the age of 29 James and his wife Elizabeth emigrated with their infant son from England on 25 December 1819 on the 'Saracen.5'

He was allocated a seat in St. David's Mission Church Campbell Street, in Hobart, soon after his arrival.1 After a voyage of 122 days James and his wife Elizabeth arrived at Hobart on 25 April 1820.5
In his adulthood James made a living as a doctor of medicine.5

In a letter dated Saturday, 3 June 1820 from Lieutant-Governor Sorell to Governor Macquarie, he was recommended as 2nd assistant surgeon, and stated that he was skilled in his profession.1

In July 1820 he received a grant of 500 acres at Alan Rivulet, in the Macquarie Plains district, which he later sold.6

In October 1822 he gave £1 to a fund collecting monies for "Wesleyan Sunday and other Schools."7

James gave notice in February 1823 that he and Zachariah Chaffey intended to apply to the Supreme Court in Sydney for "Letters of Administration to the Estate and Éffects of William Anderson, late of Sandy Bay, deceased."8

In March 1823 he had leased from Mr. Cartwright a "very valuable and desirable Dwelling-house, & Allotment of Ground" at corner of Macquarie and Murray Streets, in Hobart, and "contains several convenient apartments, with domestic offices and garden attached". It was stated that "[t]hese premises, from their centrical situation, are well adapted for a professional residence" however Cartwright was keen to sell.8 He was a foundation subscriber to the Van Diemen's Land Bank, established with a capital of 40,000 Spanish dollars.1

James was mentioned in the paper when he arrived at the house of Mr Stanfield of Green Point a day after it had been robbed by bushrangers.9 James (and presumably his spouse Elizabeth) lived in 1826 at Collins Street, in Hobart.1

On Thursday, 13 December 1827, John Ryley, a servant of James was sentenced to "18 months at Macquarie
Harbour for repeated drunkenness and for assaulting Mr. Martin, Dr. W.'s assistant."10,11 James (and presumably his spouse Elizabeth) lived in January 1829 at the corner of Murray and Collins streets, in Hobart. in January 1829 he lived on or near Hobart, presumably with his wife and five children.12 Dr. James Henry Westbrook was described as a "gentleman of fair complection (sic), good stature, middle age, very slightly marked by smallpox, wearing his hair, which was of a light colour, flat and straight at the sides pushed up in front in the shape of a cone - his manner and style were remarkably mild and complacent - very attentive to the wants of those about him - particularly the ladies". in August 1829.13

It was reported on Saturday, 10 March 1832 that James was severely ill after a broken thigh bone:
The interest occasioned by the severe indisposition of this gentleman, is a proof of the general esteem in which he is held. We rejoice to say, that owing to the unremitting attention of Dr. Scott, the fracture is doing " as well as can be expected." Some weeks must elapse, however, before Dr. Westbrook can resume his professional duties which, in the mean time, all his medical brethren, Dr's.Turnbull, Bohun, Bryant, Russell, &c. have most kindly undertaken for him.14

He was Provincial Grand Lodge Master and Warden of Tasmanian Lodge 313 in 1833.6

In 1836 applied for additional grant of 60 acres at Sandy Bay because of a need to provide for his family after his injury; his request was refused.6 Sarah died at the house of her son, James Henry Westbrook.15

His mother died 9 May 1836 at the approximate age of 84. James was aged 45 when this happened. He moved to 79 Murray Street, in Hobart, in December 1836.16

James died on 6 December 1839 at Sydney at age 49.1 He was buried on 10 December 1839 at Sydney.1
