John Oaten was born in 1813 at Taunton, Somerset.1 He was the son of John Oaten and Susan Fearncombe.1 John Oaten was a commercial Traveller - Tin and Japan Trade.1 He was a clerk in 1841 at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.2 John lived in 1841 at a public house in Dudley Road, in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.2
John Oaten married Amy Lisle, daughter of John Richard Lisle and Mary Ann Dalton, on Tuesday, 5 November 1844 at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.1 John Oaten was a 'commercial traveller for tinware' in 1851.2 John and Amy lived in 1851 at 112 Pountney Street, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.2
On the death of his uncle Henry Fearncombe in 1856 he became half owner of the Phoenix Works (where he was currently working) and perhaps became the general manager.2
"According to the 1861 census John Oaten was employing 24 women, 7 girls, 27 boys and 64 men ... and it was soon after this Thomas built his bicycles which are described in 'Velocipedes, Bicycles and Tricycles'."2 John Oaten was a japanner.2
John died on 4 February 1868 at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.1
