Claude Herbert Oaten was the son of John Oaten and Margaret Isabella Anderson.1 Claude was born on Monday, 2 September 1867 at Melbourne.2 He was baptised at St. Peter's Eastern Hill on Sunday, 29 September 1867 at Melbourne.2 He presumably lived with his parents at at 36 Atherton Street in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy in 1870. John's brother Albert may have been living in the house previously.3
Claude emigrated from New South Wales circa 1876 on the their two surviving children. Claude arrived at Otago, New Zealand, circa 1876.
He presumably lived with his parents at Maitland Street, in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand, in 1878.4 He presumably lived with his parents at George Street, in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand, in 1880.5 He presumably lived with his parents at Filleul Street, in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand, in 1886.4 He presumably lived with his parents at Hanover Street, in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand, in 1886.6 He was a french polisher in 1889.4
He married Isabel Eyre, circa 1890 at New Zealand..7
Claude died on 13 September 1892 at Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand, at age 25.1
