Margaret Hawthorn was born circa 1840 at Lanarkshire.1 She was the daughter of William Hawthorn and Margaret McLachlan.1

She was recorded as living with her parents and older siblings Elizabeth, Sarah and Robert in the 1841 census at 28 Bell Street, Glasgow. She was recorded as being 2 years old.2

She was recorded as living with her parents, a boarder and older siblings Sarah and Elizabeth in the 1851 census at 61 New Wynd, St. Mary, Glasgow. She was recorded as being 11 years old. He was recorded as being 43 years old. Also living in the house were three of his daughters and a boarder.1 Her occupation was recorded as being a scholar in the census.1
