William Hawthorn was born circa 1851 at Glasgow.1 He was the son of William Hawthorn and Margaret McLachlan.1
He was recorded as head of household in the 1861 census with Margaret McLachlan as his spouse and children living at 61 New Wynd, St. Mary, Glasgow.1 His occupation was recorded as being a scholar in the census.1
He was recorded as living with his mother, uncle, two boarders and brother Francis in the 1871 census at 60 Back Wynd, St. Mary, Glasgow. He was recorded as being 20 years old.2 His occupation was recorded as being a book binder in the census.2
