James Hawthorn was born circa 1820 at Ireland.1 He was a labourer in March 1841.1
James Hawthorn was recorded as living with James McCheyne and his wife Elizabeth Hawthorne (who may have been his sister), their child Sarah and 3 other adults, one of who may have been James's mother, in the 1841 census at McMillans Land, Cartsdyke, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. The 1841 census only recorded adult ages rounded down to the nearest 5 years; his approximate age was recorded as 20.1
