Charles McGlashan was born on 17 February 1817 at Gargunock, Stirling.1 He was the son of Duncan McGlashan and Christian Brown.1

"Charles McGlashan was the son of a farm laborer. Somehow he was able to obtain an education and became an 'Engineer', a builder and installer of steam engines for the ocean-going vessels of the day. He received his education near Glasgow at Govan, an industrial area which be came blighted and has now been completely razed. Throught his adult life the term 'Engineer' is affixed to his name in many public records."2 He lived with his mother at Airdrie, New Monkland, Lanarkshire, in 1841.3 Charles McGlashan was an engine keeper in 1841.3

Charles McGlashan married Margaret Bartholomew on Sunday, 15 December 1844 at Barony, Lanarkshire.3

"Because of his involvement in ship building, he and his family moved to Sligo, Ireland. Later he became involved in opening an iron mine and smelter operation in conjunction with some businessmen from England. The venture eventually became bankrupt and Charles engaged in farming near Creevelea, Ireland."3

"Eventually the family sold their holdings, perhaps because they were among the few Protestants in a Catholic country. By this time Charles's wife Margaret had died. Throught the remainder of his life he lived with his daughter Marion Taylor and her husband in Liverpool, England. The family house in Liverpool is still standing (1994). It is an upper middle-class structure of several floors with servant's quarters on the upper floors. At the end of the block there is a small hotel, and across the street there is a park."4

Charles died on 21 July 1908 at Liverpool at age 91.3 He was buried at Derby cemetery, Derby, Lancashire.3

"Perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of Charles McGlashan's character was his faith in God . A grandson, Charles McGlashan Taylor, wrote that "he owed more to his grandparents for his early Christian training than to any others." He kept a poem written by his grandfather entitled, "Grandpa's Birthday Prayer," dated 17 February 1905. It goes as follows :
"Years eighty-eight I am today.
To Thee my God I Kneel and pray,
Lift my heart in grateful frame
to thank and bless thy Holy name.
Blest with long life beyond the span
which marks the pilgrimage of man.
Dependent on thy gracious care;
Thy bounteous hand provides my share.
Thy promise follows all the way,
My daily bread from day to day.
I thank the Lord that from my youth
I have been taught thy word of truth
which bids me trust my Savior dear,
my hope and comfort ever near.
My days to come Lord are with Thee;
I am resigned what e'er they be,
I have no merit to atone,
but by my Savior's blood alone."
