George Gibb was born circa 1830 at Old Machar, Aberdeen.2,1 He was the son of James Gibb and Christian Angus.1 George Gibb was baptised at Old Machar on Saturday, 18 December 1830 at Aberdeen.3,4 He may have been born circa 1832.5
George Gibb was recorded as living with his parents, the Gibb family and siblings in the 1841 census at Netherkirkgate, Aberdeen. The 1841 census only recorded adult ages rounded down to the nearest 5 years; his approximate age was recorded as 9 years old.5
He was recorded as living with his father and sister in the 1851 census at Regent Quay, Aberdeen. He was recorded as being 21 years old.2 His occupation was recorded as being a seaman in the census.2
On Monday, 14 April 1851 he was issued a certificate of competency as a Mate in Aberdeen.6
His father died 20 July 1864 at the approximate age of 67.
On Wednesday, 31 May 1871 he was granted a certificate of competency as a Master in London.7
