James F. Smith was born in 1864 at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.2 He was the son of James William Smith and Maria Cutting Boyce.2
He was recorded as living with his parents and sister Alice in the 1871 census at 13 Slinkford's Buildings, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. He was recorded as being 7 years old.4 James F. Smith was a scholar.4
He was recorded as living with his parents and siblings, Elizabeth, Alice and Beatrice in the 1881 census at 20 Tottenham Street, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. He was recorded as being 14 years old. Also in the house were four of their children.5 James F. Smith was a fisherman on 3 April 1881.5
