Charles Skerman was born circa 1845 at Hertford.2 He was the son of William Skerman and Mary Ann Darby.1 The city of Hertford dates back to at least 673, and was an important market town surrounded by agricultural land. From the late 16th century, it had access to the London corn markets via the Lea river.
He was recorded as living with his parents and siblings George, Eliza and Emma in the 1851 census at Parliament Row, Hertford.3 Charles Skerman was a printer - compositor in April 1861.4

Charles Skerman married Susanna Dunsby circa March 1873 at Hertford.6
He was recorded as head of household in the 1881 census with Susanna Dunsby as his spouse and children living at Hertford. Also living in the house were two of his sons, his mother and one of his younger sisters.7
Charles died circa 1932.8
