George Darby Skerman was born circa 1843 at Bengeo, Hertford.2 He was the son of William Skerman and Mary Ann Darby.1 Bengeo is a parish and village just north of Hertford; the village was gradually incorporated into the larger town. The part that ajoins Hertford is lower, rising to agricultural land to the north. The chief crops were wheat, barley and turnips.3



He was recorded as living with his parents and siblings Charles, Eliza and Emma in the 1851 census at Parliament Row, Hertford.4 George Darby Skerman was a whitesmith in April 1861.5

George died on 21 February 1865 at Hertford after a long and painful illness.6,7
