William Skerman was born circa 1800.1 He was the son of James Skerman and Ann Cotton.1 William Skerman was baptised at St. Mary on Sunday, 23 November 1800 at Hitchin, Hertfordshire.1

He married Charlotte Carr, in 1824 at Stepney, London..1

He married Elizabeth Rachael Hall, on Thursday, 3 May 1838 at Hertford..1 William Skerman was a maker of church and turret clocks circa 1839 at Parliament Row, Hertford.2

He was recorded as head of household in the 1841 census at Hertford. Also in the household were three of his children.3 William lived in October 1842 at Aldenhurst Street, London.4

He married Mary Ann Darby, daughter of George Darby and Elizabeth Aylott, in a Church of England ceremony at St. Pancras New Church on Wednesday, 26 October 1842 at St. Pancras, London. This was the third marriage for William. Mary was the daughter of a Herford millwright and builder. The wedding certificate was also signed by Amelia Darby and Laurence John Coxall. Others who may have attended the wedding include George Darby as father of the bride. Brothers and sisters who may have attended include Lucretia Darby, Eliza Darby and Elizabeth Darby. They went on to have 5 children together.1,5,6 The city of Hertford dates back to at least 673, and was an important market town surrounded by agricultural land. From the late 16th century, it had access to the London corn markets via the Lea river.



He was recorded as head of household in the 1851 census with Mary Ann Darby as his spouse at Hertford. Also living in the household were four of their children.7 His occupation was recorded as being a clock-maker, smith and founder employing 7 men in the census.7

He was recorded as head of household in the 1861 census with Mary Ann Darby as his spouse at Hertford. Also living in the house were four of their chldren.8 His occupation was recorded as being a whitesmith in the census.8

He was recorded as head of household in the 1871 census with Mary Ann Darby as his spouse and children living at Hertford.9 His occupation was recorded as being a clockmaker in the census.9

William died circa December 1874 at Hertford.1
