Wilfred George Darby was born on 29 November 1887 at The Grange, South Australia.1 He was the son of John Darby and Edith Watson.1

Tragedy struck the Darby family when John and Edith's son Kenny Darby, not quite two years of age, was shot dead by his seventeen year old brother Eustace on 23 February 1896. There was an inquest, and a verdict brought down of accidental death with no blame being attached to anyone.2,3 Wilfred George Darby obtained a third class pass from the School of Mines and Industries on 19 December 1906.4 He was employed by the Lighthouse Service, carrying out mechanical repairs to both manned and unmanned lights in 1912.5,6

Wilfred George Darby married Dorothy Elizabeth Harden, daughter of Joseph Harden and Caroline Elinor Daw, at St. Bedes Church on Monday, 8 July 1918 at the Adelaide suburb of Semaphore. They were 30 and 27 respectively.7

Wilfred died on 20 March 1927 at Adelaide Hospital, in Adelaide, at age 39 of pneumonia.8,6 His body was interred at Cheltenham Cemetery on 21 March 1927 at Cheltenham, South Australia.9
