James D. M. Nicholson was born on 11 June 1819 at Edinburgh.3 He was the son of Daniel Nicholson and Jane Wilkie.2 James D. M. Nicholson was baptised at St. Cuthbert's on Thursday, 8 July 1819 at Edinburgh.3

At the age of 20 James emigrated from Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland, on 5 June 1840 on the 'Martin Luther' with his parents and siblings.4,5 After a voyage of three and a half months James arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia, on 20 September 1840. Also on board was a Mrs Darby - this may well have been the wife of Samuel or William Darby, brothers of Thomas Darby who later married the Nicholson's youngest daughter Jessie. The Nicholsons also saw fit to arrive with 16 casks bottled ale, 9 cases sundries and 1 of cask cider.4,5,6
He was the harbour master at Hardwicke Bay, South Australia.7

He married Margaret Theodora Teichelmann, daughter of Reverend C. G. Teichelmann, on Wednesday, 8 May 1878 at Minlacowie, South Australia..7 James lived in January 1879 at Melbourne.8
