Joseph was born in 1778. He was the son of John Oaten and Mary Ruckley. Joseph Oaten was baptised at St. Andrew and St. Mary on Sunday, 25 October 1778 at Pitminster, Somerset.1
Joseph Oaten may have married Mary Harwood circa 1800.2
His father died 29 September 1826 at the approximate age of 87.
In John Oaten's will on 21 March 1837 Hannah Tamsey, Mary Oaten, Anne Oaten, Harriet Oaten and Hannah Oaten, Elizabeth Oaten and Amelia Oaten, Harriet Finney, William Finney, Mary Barker, Harriet Oaten and Joseph Oaten were named as heirs. As John's brother, he was to receive 4 shillings per week from the estate.2
Joseph died on 4 April 1838 at Trull, Somerset.3
