Donald was born on Friday, 19 September 1884 at South Mount Hope, New South Wales.1 He was the son of James Brown Nicholson and Lydia Horsnell.
He married Martha Rose Horsnell, a machinist, daughter of Henry Joseph Horsnell and Annie Molloy, in a Roman Catholic ceremony at the Church of St. Columba on Sunday, 13 November 1910 at Wrightville, in the district of Cobar, New South Wales. Donald Nicholson, most likely Donald's uncle, attended the wedding as a witness..2 Donald lived in November 1910 at Wrightville, in the district of Cobar, New South Wales.2 Donald was employed as a blacksmith in November 1910.2
Donald died on 27 December 1954 at the Sydney suburb of Parramatta at age 70.3 He was buried on 29 December 1954 at at Rookwood Cemetery (Catholic section) in the Sydney suburb of Rookwood.4
