Ruth was born circa 1832 at Rugeley, Staffordshire.1,2 She was the daughter of James Leonard and Mary Wayte.1 Ruth Anna Leonard was baptized at Independent chapel on Sunday, 24 June 1832 at Armitage, Staffordshire.2 Ruth Anna Leonard was also known as Annie.

She was recorded as living with her parents, 3 young children, and her siblings Emma, Martha and Mary in the 1841 census at 1 Boundary Street, Hulme, Manchester. No records have been found for this person for a twenty year period from 1841 to 1861. There is some speculation that the family may have emmigrated to the colony of South Australia, but returned. Certainly Mary Leonard went to South Australia (probably in 1845), married and had two children but returned in 1857 with them on the death of her husband.

She was recorded as living with her brother, two young nephews returned from South Australia, two boarders and servant. in the 1861 census at 37 Burlington Street, Chorlton-on-Medlock, Manchester. She was recorded as being 27 years old, but was probably closer to 30..5 Ruth Anna Leonard was a housekeeper in April 1861.6

Ruth Anna Leonard married Thomas Terry circa June 1862 at Chorlton-on-Medlock, Manchester.7

Ruth Anna Leonard was recorded as the spouse of Thomas Terry in the 1871 census at Lansdown Villa Wilmslow Road. She was recorded as being 38 years old, but was probably closer to 40.8

Ruth Anna Leonard was recorded as the spouse of Thomas Terry in the 1881 census at Wilmslow Road, Withington, Lancashire. She was recorded as being 44 years old, but was probably closer to 50. She was also living with her 5 sons, a boarder and a servant.9
